Crank Up Towers

The Tower

The Tower
Welsh author Tristan Hughes' first novel is told with artistry and elegance. Seven inter-locking stories are all held together by the tower, a ruined windmill, "its four great wings an airy constellation spread out across the heavens." The tower, in a rural Welsh village, is where Nairn found the old miller hanging from the rafters with all of the life of one of his floury smocks. Jack Cucu, back from Burma with more than the fever in his brain, believed he was the sentinel of the tower until he died. And now the tower's getting fixed up for flashy Derrick Dallas who wants to turn the tower into a drinking den. A derelict tower, colored by clan and community, bound by lines of blood, is brought alive through the stories of those who have spent their lives in its presence. Here are tales that spool backwards and forwards across three generational divides, and further back to ship-wrecking ancestors.
