Pioneer Planet
Planets, The In 1916, Gustav Host, a composer of music and self-admitted mystic, wrote a brilliant orchestral suit entitled "The Planets." This work has been enjoyed by millions in concert halls, under the stars in outdoor amphitheaters, and at home on phonograph records, audio tapes and compact discs. Sixty years after "The Planets" was written, internationally renowned keyboard artist and composer. Isao Tomita created a highly popular electronic version of the Holst suite. It is "The Tomita Planets" that award-winning Director Don Barrett has chosen for the soundtrack of his musical video grand tour of the Solar System. Barrett makes use of actual outer space photography returned to Earth by the Marnier, Viking, Voyager, Pioneer, Magellan and Galileo spacecrafts. That footage, combined with supercomputer animation and special digital video effects created expressly for "The Planets," is choreographed to the Holsts/ Tomita music. Scientific accuracy throughout the planetary segments co-exists with artistic license within transitional material (including portions labeled "Interlude") to create a magnificent marriage of sight and sound, art and science. Writer/ Director Don Barett is one of the worlds most prolific creators of original videos. His works have received both critical acclaim and public praise, and have been twice nominated for Best Special Interest Video for the Year by the American Film Institute. Among his 24 releases are: "The Voyager Odyssey (1977-1989), "The Wonderful Planet," "The Floating World Destination: Universe," "The NFL Football Trivia Game" and "The Story Of The Space Shuttle.
New Worlds in the Cosmos: The Discovery of Exoplanets by Michel Mayor, With the discovery in 1995 of the first planet orbiting another star, we now realize that planets are not unique to our own Solar System. For centuries, humanity has wondered whether we are alone in the Universe. We are now finally one step closer to knowing the answer. The quest for exoplanets is an exciting one because it holds the possibility that one day we might find life elsewhere in the Universe, born in the light of another sun. Written from the perspective of one of the pioneers of this scientific adventure, this exciting account describes the development of the modern observing technique that has enabled astronomers to find so many planets orbiting around other stars. It reveals the wealth of new planets that have now been discovered outside our Solar System, and the meaning of this finding as it concerns other life in the Universe. Michel Mayor is Director of the Observatory of Geneva, Switzerland. In 1995, together with Didier Queloz, he discovered the first extrasolar planet (51 Peg b) around a main sequence star, and has discovered many more since. His work earned him the prestigious Balzan Prize in 2000, for Instrumentation and Techniques in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Pierre-Yves Frei is a science journalist with the Swiss newspaper, Lausanne Hebdo. In 1998 he was awarded the Media Prize of the Swiss Natural Sciences Academy for science popularization. Boud Roukema is the translator.
Pioneer 11 - Pioneer 11 was the second mission to investigate Jupiter and the outer solar system and the first to explore the planet Saturn and its main rings. Pioneer 11 (also called Pioneer G), like Pioneer 10, used Jupiter's mass in a gravitational slingshot to alter its trajectory toward Saturn. Pioneer Venus project - The Pioneer mission to Venus consisted of two components, launched separately. Pioneer Venus 1, Pioneer Venus Orbiter was launched in 1978 and studied the planet for more than a decade after orbital insertion in 1978. Pioneer Square South and Pioneer Square North (MAX stations) - The Pioneer Square South/Pioneer Square North stations are light rail stations on the MAX Blue, Red, and Yellow lines in Portland, Oregon. It is considered the central station on the MAX system, although the Eastside and Westside MAX lines technically end/begin just past the Galleria and Library stations to the west. Inner planet - An inner planet is any one of the Solar system's rocky planets that lie inside the asteroid belt: Mercury (planet), Venus (planet), Earth (planet) and Mars (planet). The remaining planets are deemed the outer planets.
